‘Slow Down you Crazy Child’

“Slow down you’re doing fine
You can’t be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it’s so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)
Too bad but it’s the life you lead
You’re so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you’re wrong
You know you can’t always see when you’re right (you’re right)

You got your passion you got your pride
But don’t you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don’t imagine they’ll all come true
When will you realize
Vienna waits for you”

— Billy Joel, Vienna

Billy Joel’s song has painted a wondrously mysterious image of Vienna, calling me there ever since I can remember. This summer’s Europe trip was finally my chance to see what this city is all about.

Vienna was awesome – fairly large, yet manageable. And very clean!

Here is also where we had our first ‘couchsurfing‘ experience, staying with a lovely college couple! Couchsurfing is a great way to travel cheaply and to truly get to experience all that a place has to offer. Thanks to Lukas and Cornelia, we got to know the city of Vienna, as well as Austrian culture, on a deeper level than we would have been able to do in a hostel.

The three of us with Lukas and Cornelia, our hosts!

Together, we all cooked Austrian food (schnitzel), had a picnic, explored a botanical garden, biked along the Danube, and experienced Vienna’s bar scene!

Wiener schnitzel (breaded then fried veal or pork) - delicious!

My favorite thing about Vienna was the Belvedere Palace. This palace, turned museum, is home to some of Europe’s finest art.

The Belvedere Palace

I spent hours wandering in and out of the Belvedere’s rooms. For me, this was the beginning of a new-found love of art. Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Kiss’ hung here, one of the most wonderful pieces of art I have ever seen. Klimt instantly won my admiration, and got put on my list of top artists.

Aside from gazing at art, we spent our time in Vienna admiring St. Stephen’s Cathedral, exploring downtown, getting lost in a labyrinth, and soaking in the beauty of this great city!

“Slow down, you crazy child
and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile
it’s all right, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize,..Vienna waits for you?”
